Sleep should be a sweet, refreshing respite. But for some people, shut-eye is elusive, painful, or downright bizarre. A sleep psychologist logs his strangest cases.

A very interesting article, Al. There are some sleep disorders that I've never heard of like the incubus attack. Well I've heard it of in it the sense that some people believe in incubus (incubi) and thought they were being attacked by one or more. I didn't know there was a sleep disorder and that it had an actual name but it makes sense. And the sex sleep disorder. It sounds strange but very understandable.
I use to have a serious problem with sleepwalking as a child. Sometimes I'd wake up and I'd be sitting at the neighbors kitchen table where they might be playing cards or something. Very embarrassing but of course they were concerned when they realized what it was. Sometimes I'd walk near the road which was terrifying when I woke up. It was very dark and an old country road so nobody would have seen me until it was too late. But I guess I grew out of it. Maybe that's what cured me.
My basic problem is that I don't think I'm going though all the sleep phases. I have dreams but I don't know that I get deep quality sleep. I went to a "part time" sleep clinic which was a joke because it was poorly set up and there was a new tech who didn't know what she was doing. Anyway, supposedly I didn't go through all the sleep phases. It would be very difficult to tell since she kept waking me up every hr. A neurologist ran it on the side but I hope to hell they've gotten their act together.
The article has some great ideas that I'll try. Oh, the computer thing--I don't stay up til midnight and after anymore. And I don't get back on it if I can't sleep. That's helped a lot. Another thing I highly recommend is to drink a glass of milk before going to bed. Or some having some kind of milk product like yogurt.
Thanks for the great article!

I'm glad to hear that the article may have had some ideas for you to try, I was hoping this would be relevant to some out there. I will continue to try and find more on this topic that isn't just a rehash of everything other articles have already mentioned.
Hope you're feeling better, and have at least had some pleasant dreams in there. >:D<

I'm doing pretty good now that I don't allow myself to get back on the computer once I go to bed. Drinking milk seems to be helping me too and I'm getting more calciulm at the same time. My Dr. gave me a RX for vit D because I was deficient and that seems to help too. Vit B-12 can do wonders for just about everything including sleep.
If you get hot like I do during the night, turn the ceiling fan on low even when you are getting ready to go to sleep. It's hard to sleep in a room that's too warm. I couldn't sleep without my little noise maker either. I just use a small fan that's set near my closet and not too close to my bed. (It's too loud there.) It makes great white noise.
So I'm learning what works for me. I think it's different things for different people but the basics help a lot.
Thanks for all the great sleep articles, Al. They help a lot.

Heh, I should have mentioned the fan thing myself. I keep a fan right by the bed. The noise isn't bad, since I can fall asleep with the emergency vehicles going by, sirens blaring. Need the fan or opening the window a crack (yes even in winter up here!). Always sleep better cold, somehow wrapped in blankets.
As you said though, whatever works for you. As well as proper diet, and never exercise before bedtime, only after getting up.

Wow! I don't know if I could take the cracked window when it's a Northern Winter. But I'd rather do that than be in a room that stifling hot. If it wasn't for my cat, I would have the heat turned down much lower. We really haven't had a bad Winter and I don't think we will.
Another problem for me is that I don't get out in the sunshine every day. That's probably why I'm vit D deficient. Sunshine plays a big part in that ( along with calcium) even if it's only 15 min. a day.

Yoiks!

Have to have that Vit D. Working nights sleeping days, I find myself drinking lots of milk, eating yogurt. Don't know if you've seen all the Vit D seeds on NV, but they all agree most don't get enough and that its more important than most people realize.
Know it sounds weird, but vit C helps aid in the absorption of calcium, in case you've been needing more of that in your diet.

When I go out, it's a nice salad and fruit. It's almost a luxury these days.

I hope you are referring to the "going out" as almost a luxury, and not the meal!

A bit of both. It takes a good bit of money to eat fresh vegetables and fruits every day. So yeah, I splurge on a HUGE salad and fruits to get in my veggies. I get some through frozen veg. during the week so it's not that bad. lol

I agree it is (expensive), but supposedly frozen are just as good if not better than fresh veggies for you. I tend to buy a lot of fresh fruit, but mostly frozen veggies.
Pleasant dreams, Lady Darrah. >:D<
